By now, most people are familiar with “cash for gold”. You bring your used jewelry to a gold buyer, and you walk out with cash.
With the precious metal prices skyrocketing amid worries of the coronavirus, it’s important to know what you can and can’t sell at your local gold buyer.
At Memphis Gold & Diamond Buyers, we’re committed to providing you with excellent customer service, honesty, and fair pricing.
So, in this post, we’ll give you a clearer picture of the services we offer to our customers, so if you have something you want to sell, you’ll know whether or not we can make you an offer.
Costume Jewelry
While fabulous, fine, and fun, costume jewelry means one thing: fake. Constructed out of base metals, string, leather, glass, and plastics, costume jewelry has no precious metal value.
One of the ways we make sure our customers get paid the most for their valuables is by only specializing in items that have precious metal or diamond value. It’s a benefit to you that we don’t buy costume jewelry.
Rarely, you can sell costume jewelry if it’s vintage or antique. Nevertheless, we don’t buy it here.
Gemstones
Like costume jewelry, with very rare exceptions, most gemstones have no value. Yes, the color and cut are gorgeous, but they don’t sell well, they’re not a commodity, and they’re very often synthetic – made to look and feel real.
A jeweler would need to certify the authenticity of the gemstone, and that’s time-consuming and expensive. It’s much easier for them to purchase gems by a reputable wholesaler.
While we don’t buy gemstones, we do buy the gold, silver, or platinum setting the gemstone is in. If you’d like, we can remove your gemstone for you to keep at no cost to you.
Moissanite
Moissanite is a crystal composed of silicon carbide and engineered to give the illusion of a diamond. Because it’s man-made, they lack rarity, and the value depreciates significantly.
Much like gemstones, moissanite is difficult to resell.
Pennies
Every day, we buy bags and bags and bags of American silver dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollars. But, we don’t buy pennies because they’re made of copper and zinc. Also, the only nickels with silver were minted between 1942 and 1945, so while we do buy nickels, it’s rare that silver ones walk through the door.
